PLF Reviews explains the mental triggers Jeff Walker describes in his book Launch (first published in 2014): the psychological reasons people decide to buy, and how a Product Launch Formula launch stacks them in the right order.

A true story about meaning: Viktor Frankl

Viktor Frankl, a Vienna psychiatrist, was deported in 1942. His father, mother, brother and wife died in the camps; the manuscript of his life’s work was taken from him at Auschwitz. He survived and, in 1946, wrote in nine days the book known in English as Man’s Search for Meaning, which has sold millions of copies.

Frankl’s central idea — that meaning is the strongest human motivation — sits underneath every mental trigger in the Product Launch Formula. People don’t buy features; they buy what a result means for their lives. Read the full story, told with respect: Viktor Frankl: meaning after the camps.

In one sentence

Mental triggers aren't tricks; they're the reasons people already use to decide.

A launch works because its sequence naturally activates several of them at once. Used dishonestly — fake scarcity, invented testimonials — they backfire and can break the law.

The mental triggers in a Product Launch Formula launch

TriggerWhat it meansWhere it shows up in a launch
AuthorityPeople follow those who show expertisePLC2 teaches something real
ReciprocityValue given first creates goodwillThree free pieces of content
TrustBuilt by consistency over timeEmails and content on schedule
AnticipationLooking forward to somethingRelease dates, countdown to cart open
LikabilityWe buy from people we relate toYour story, honesty, personality
Events and ritualsEvents draw attentionThe launch itself; a live PLC3
CommunityBeing part of a groupComments, live chat, cohorts
Social proofOthers are doing itTestimonials, case studies, comments
ScarcityA limit prompts a decisionReal cart close or limited spots

In Portuguese-speaking markets the same idea is known as gatilhos mentais, one of the most used terms in Brazil’s launch industry.

How the triggers stack across a launch

  • Pre-prelaunch: anticipation and community (a survey invites people in).
  • PLC1: likability and anticipation.
  • PLC2: authority and reciprocity.
  • PLC3: social proof, trust and anticipation of the offer.
  • Open cart: scarcity, plus everything built before it.

Jeff Walker’s own weekly Masterclass follows this order: free content Monday and Tuesday, a live event Thursday at 4:00 pm ET, and a real deadline on Sunday at midnight ET.

Using mental triggers ethically (and legally)

  • Scarcity must be real. If the cart closes, it closes. If bonuses expire, they expire.
  • Social proof must be real. In the United States, the FTC’s Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising (16 CFR Part 255) treat fake or misleading endorsements as deceptive. PLF Reviews never invents testimonials.
  • Authority must be earned. Teach what you actually know.
  • Reciprocity must be generous, not a disguised pitch.

Mental triggers and introverts

Many people fear that “triggers” mean pushy selling. In practice, a PLF launch replaces pressure with sequence: by the time you make an offer, you’ve already helped people. That’s why many successful launchers describe themselves as introverts.

Common mental-trigger mistakes in launches

  • Countdown timers that reset on refresh.
  • Testimonials without real names or permission.
  • “Only 3 spots left” when there’s no limit.
  • Starting with scarcity before building trust.

Questions & answers

Mental triggers: questions and answers

They are the psychological principles Jeff Walker describes in Launch — authority, reciprocity, trust, anticipation, likability, events and rituals, community, social proof and scarcity — that explain why people decide to buy.

Not when used honestly. They describe real reasons people decide; they become manipulative when faked, such as false scarcity or invented testimonials.

No single one. A launch works because its sequence stacks several triggers: reciprocity and authority in the prelaunch content, anticipation from release dates and scarcity at the close.

Misleading claims can violate consumer-protection law, and fake or misleading endorsements are covered by the FTC's endorsement guides (16 CFR Part 255) in the United States. Keep every deadline and testimonial real.

'Gatilhos mentais' is the Portuguese term for mental triggers, widely used in Brazil's digital launch market.
