The Jeff Walker Sideways Sales Letter, Explained

PLF Reviews explains the Sideways Sales Letter™, the Jeff Walker idea at the heart of Product Launch Formula: a traditional sales letter turned on its side and delivered as three pieces of free prelaunch content (PLC1, PLC2, PLC3) before a single offer.

A true story about showing instead of telling: Sara Blakely

When Sara Blakely pitched her product to a buyer at Neiman Marcus, she didn’t just describe it. According to accounts of the meeting, she showed the before and after herself. The product went into seven stores. Before that, she had spent years selling fax machines door to door — and heard “no” from every hosiery mill she visited until one called back.

The Sideways Sales Letter is Jeff Walker’s way of “showing instead of telling” at scale: a sequence of free, valuable content that lets people experience your expertise before you make an offer. It is one of the core ideas of the Product Launch Formula. Read the full story: Sara Blakely: $5,000 and a lot of no.

What Is the Sideways Sales Letter?

The Sideways Sales Letter™ is Jeff Walker’s name for a marketing sequence that delivers your sales message over time, through valuable content, instead of all at once on a single long page.

A traditional (“vertical”) sales letter is read top to bottom: headline, story, problem, solution, benefits, proof, offer, guarantee, call to action. It can work — but it asks a stranger to read a long, one-sided pitch and decide on the spot.

The sideways sequence takes the same persuasive elements and turns them on their side, spreading them across a series of free content pieces released over several days. Each piece is useful in its own right, so prospects want to consume it. By the time the offer arrives, they’ve already experienced most of the sales argument — voluntarily.

Vertical vs. Sideways: The Difference

Vertical sales letterSideways Sales Letter
One page, consumed in minutesSeveral pieces, released over days
Pitch firstValue first, pitch last
One-wayTwo-way (comments, questions, replies)
StaticAn event with anticipation
Persuades with wordsPersuades with experience and results
Easy to ignorePeople look forward to the next piece

The Structure: PLC1, PLC2, PLC3 and the Offer

PLC1 — The Opportunity

Answers “why should I care?” Show the possibility of change, why it matters now and why the usual approaches fail. Plant hope. End with a teaser for the next piece.

PLC2 — The Transformation

Teach something real. Give a concrete piece of the method and a quick win. This is where trust is earned — the prospect experiences your expertise firsthand.

PLC3 — The Ownership Experience

Help people imagine life after the transformation. Share stories and proof, answer common objections, and let people know an offer is coming.

The launch offer (open cart)

Present the product: what’s included, the price, bonuses, the guarantee and a real deadline. Because the previous pieces did the heavy lifting, the offer can be straightforward and honest.

Why the Sideways Sales Letter Works

  • Reciprocity: you’ve given real value, so people are open to hearing your offer.
  • Authority: each piece demonstrates your expertise.
  • Anticipation: release dates create a reason to come back.
  • Community and social proof: comments show others are engaged.
  • Trust: consistency over several days builds credibility no single page can.
  • Self-selection: people who watch all three pieces are pre-qualified buyers.

Sideways Sales Letter Examples

Below are original illustrative outlines (not from the course).

Sideways Sales Letter example 1: an online photography course

  • PLC1: “Why your phone photos look flat — and the 3 things pros do differently.”
  • PLC2: “The 10-minute lighting exercise that will transform your photos today.”
  • PLC3: “From snapshots to portfolio: Daniel’s 60-day story — and what’s next for you.”
  • Offer: an 8-week online course with weekly assignments and feedback, enrollment open for 5 days.

Sideways Sales Letter example 2: a business coach

  • PLC1: “Why most freelancers stay underpaid (and it’s not their skills).”
  • PLC2: “The pricing conversation script that raised my clients’ rates by 30%.”
  • PLC3: “What a fully booked, premium practice looks like — and how three clients got there.”
  • Offer: a 12-week group coaching program with limited spots.

Sideways Sales Letter example 3: a local fitness studio

  • PLC1: a video on why most people quit new year fitness plans by February.
  • PLC2: a free at-home 20-minute workout.
  • PLC3: member stories and a tour of the new studio.
  • Offer: founding memberships with a bonus for the first week only.

Tips for Writing Your Sideways Sales Letter

  1. Make every piece genuinely useful — even for people who never buy.
  2. End each piece with an open loop pointing to the next one.
  3. Ask for comments and respond to them; feature great comments in the next piece.
  4. Seed the offer gently in PLC3 so the open cart doesn’t come as a surprise.
  5. Keep the deadline real. Honest scarcity builds trust; fake scarcity destroys it.
  6. Choose your format: video, live streams, podcast episodes, emails or posts all work.
