PLF Reviews breaks down prelaunch content — the three free pieces Jeff Walker calls PLC1, PLC2 and PLC3 — which carry most of the persuasion in a Product Launch Formula launch before the offer is ever made.
A true story about teaching first: Malala Yousafzai

At 11, Malala Yousafzai began writing an anonymous blog for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. She kept speaking about girls’ right to education — and in 2012, at 15, she was shot on her way home from an exam. She survived, spoke at the United Nations on her 16th birthday and, at 17, became the youngest Nobel laureate in history.
Her story is about far more than business, and we tell it with respect. But it holds one lesson for anyone who teaches: a small platform can carry a big message. Prelaunch content in the Product Launch Formula is your platform to teach first. Read the full story: Malala: the voice they couldn’t silence.
Three pieces of free content, each with one job: opportunity, transformation, ownership.
Together they form the Sideways Sales Letter. If the prelaunch content is useful, the open cart is easy; if it’s thin, no sales page can save the launch.
The job of each piece of prelaunch content
| PLC1 | PLC2 | PLC3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core job | The opportunity | The transformation | The ownership experience |
| Question it answers | “Why should I care?” | “Does this actually work?” | “What would my life look like?” |
| Reader feels | Hope | Confidence | Desire |
| Ends with | A teaser for PLC2 | A teaser for PLC3 | The offer date |
PLC1 — the opportunity
Show what’s possible and why it matters now. Name the problem, explain why the usual fixes fail, and share a story — yours or a student’s — that proves change is possible. No pitch.
PLC2 — the transformation
Teach something real. A method, a framework, one exercise that delivers a quick win the viewer can try today. This is where trust is built; people judge your paid product by the quality of this free lesson.
PLC3 — the ownership experience
Help people picture life after the result. Share case studies, answer the main objections and tell them when the doors open. Jeff Walker’s own PLC3 is a live broadcast every Thursday at 4:00 pm Eastern Time, and the Product Launch Formula offer is presented during it.
Prelaunch content formats
- Video — the most common format; easy to show personality and demonstrations.
- Live streams — create an event; Jeff keeps PLC3 live for this reason.
- Email lessons — work well for writers and B2B audiences.
- Podcast mini-series — good for audio-first audiences.
- Slides with voiceover — for people who prefer not to be on camera.
In Brazil, where the method became a whole industry after Erico Rocha’s licensed Portuguese version of PLF (Fórmula de Lançamento, announced by Jeff Walker in June 2013), the same pieces are known as CPL1, CPL2 and CPL3.
How long should each PLC be?
There is no fixed rule. Long enough to deliver the promised value, short enough that people finish. Many launches use videos of 15 to 45 minutes. Watch completion and comments, not just views.
Comment prompts that turn prelaunch content into community
Each piece should end with a specific question people can answer in a comment:
- PLC1: “What’s the biggest thing stopping you from ___?”
- PLC2: “Try the exercise and tell me your result.”
- PLC3: “If you had ___ in 90 days, what would change for you?”
Replies become social proof, objection research and material for the next piece.
Proof that prelaunch content drives results
Matthew Woodward reports that his first launch built on prelaunch videos and the Sideways Sales Letter made $134,171 in six days (review updated May 30, 2026), with his biggest day — $45,025 — coming near the close.
Prelaunch content mistakes
- Pitching in PLC1. Earn attention first.
- Holding back the good stuff. Teaching generously sells the paid product; withholding doesn’t.
- No open loops. Each piece should make people want the next one.
- Releasing all three at once. Spacing creates anticipation.
