If your plans changed suddenly — a job lost, a business disrupted, a launch with the Product Launch Formula that didn’t go how you hoped — you probably know the feeling of not recognizing your own life for a while. Bethany Hamilton knows it in a way few people ever will.
She was 13, one of the most promising young surfers in Hawaii. In a few seconds on a Halloween morning, everything about how she surfed — how she paddled, balanced, stood up on a board — was taken away. What she did next is why her name is known around the world.
Chapter 1Bethany Hamilton, a girl born to the ocean
Bethany Hamilton was born on February 8, 1990, in Lihue, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Her family surfed. She was in the water almost as soon as she could walk, and by her early teens she was competing seriously. A professional career looked possible.
Chapter 2October 31, 2003: Bethany Hamilton and the tiger shark
Early on the morning of October 31, 2003, Bethany went surfing at Tunnels Beach on Kauai. She was lying on her board with her left arm dangling in the water.
A tiger shark about 14 feet (4.3 meters) long attacked. It bit off her left arm just below the shoulder.
The people with her got her to shore and she was rushed to the hospital. By the time she arrived, she had lost more than 60% of her blood.
She survived. But the question everyone asked — including, surely, Bethany herself — was whether she would ever surf again.
A surfer needs both arms to paddle, to push up, to balance. At 13, she had one.Chapter 3
26 days later: Bethany Hamilton paddles back out
On November 26, 2003 — 26 days after the attack — Bethany Hamilton went back into the ocean.
Everything had to be relearned. Paddling with one arm. Getting up on the board without pushing with two hands. Duck-diving under waves. With the help of her family and coaches, she adapted, one movement at a time. She fell. She tried again.
On January 10, 2004 — less than ten weeks after the attack — she entered her first major competition.
Chapter 4Bethany Hamilton’s comeback
In 2004 she received the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athlete. That same year her autobiography, Soul Surfer, was published. She went on to place second at the ASP World Junior Championships and returned to professional surfing. In 2011 Soul Surfer became a feature film — and Bethany performed her own one-armed surfing stunts.
In 2014 she won the Surf ‘n’ Sea Pipeline Women’s Pro. She married Adam Dirks in 2013; they have four children. In 2018 she was the subject of the documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable.
What Bethany Hamilton’s story teaches about launching a product
Bethany Hamilton lesson 1: go back in before you feel ready
Twenty-six days. She didn’t wait until she felt confident. She went back and learned while doing. Many people who want to launch wait for confidence that only comes from launching. Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula is designed to let you launch at the level you’re at — even a simple first launch builds the skill.
Bethany Hamilton lesson 2: adapt the technique, keep the goal
She didn’t change her dream; she changed her technique. If one launch format doesn’t fit you, change the format, not the goal. PLF teaches several types of launches — seed, internal, JV, evergreen — so you can fit the method to your situation.
Bethany Hamilton lesson 3: let your team help
Her family, friends and coaches were part of her comeback. Launches go better with help too: a partner to review your emails, a friend to test your videos, a community to keep you accountable.
Bethany Hamilton lesson 4: your setback can become your message
Bethany’s story became books, a film and a platform from which she encourages others. The difficult experiences that brought you to your expertise are often what makes your audience trust you.
The moment Bethany Hamilton could have stayed on the beach
No one would have blamed a 13-year-old for never going back into the ocean where she almost died. She went back in 26 days — and learned, one wave at a time, a new way to stand up.
